Things I Hate and Love In Poker
Things I Hate
- In a Hellmuthian manner, you set up the perfect trap over maybe hours of play, you've totally nailed how your opponent plays and now you've set the trap and are about to reap the rewards, but no, they've hit their 3 outer and knocked you out the game.
- Games that you simply cannot win. Sometimes you play games and you watch hands play out that you would have won if you hadn't folded, others would have gone differently if you'd won that flip but some games you sit in despair because even if you played EVERY hand, you still wouldn't hit a goddam thing. And as soon as you do get it all in, you're out.
- Player dealt tournaments. I cannot believe this is a thing. I cannot believe people stand for it. It's probably acceptable for a £5 game down the pub, but in a casino? A scheduled tournament with a £40+ buyin? Fuck right off. And as far as I can tell, it only happens in Scotland, I've played a fair few tournaments in England, not a thing there, so why is it a thing in Scotland? It's the same companies all across the UK, with the same business model, what is the difference? I hate it. It ruins the experience, I spend the whole time playing concerned that I'll lose the high card and have to deal, it not only ruins your game but even just on principle, I'm now working for the casino FOR FREE!
Things I Love
- When for whatever reason, you decide to get a little out of line and raise or 3bet with a hand you know you shouldn't, maybe it's seven deuce or something like that, you're just being goofy, but it triggers off a series of events leading to a much bigger pot than it ever should have been and you just quietly remove yourself and watch the fireworks.
- Similarly, if you're thinking of making a move, maybe a light 3bet or such, and all hell breaks loose before your turn, and you can safely slink away safe in the knowledge you've just dodged a bullet.
- When you get distracted during the 5 minute break online, whether it's twitter, TV, whatever and you completely forget you're in the midst of a poker tournament. You'd think this belongs in the hate category but it always catches me off guard of how much an idiot I am, and always makes me laugh despite how much it costs me.
- Cramming as much as possible into the 5 minute break. Kinda the opposite situation as above, you know you have a limited amount of time and a number of potential tasks to fit in. Obviously, a toilet break is the norm but what about those dishes? The clothes washing? A shower perhaps? Catching up on all those chores you really should have done earlier but you've now got 300 seconds to make it look like you haven't spent all day sitting in your pants playing poker before your other half gets home. Ridiculous, why do we do it to ourselves?
- All the side adventures that aren't even poker related really, like drunken shenanigans in the casino at 4am, travelling to other countries, meeting people you would never otherwise meet.
